Why are car companies/plants shying away from the traditional manual transmissions in automobiles?

I noticed Dodge Chrysler and a lot of car companies have that auto shift gear box. That’s so wack, compared to the traditional clutch. It just goes from side to side for gears, no more clutch. It’s really still an automatic to me because the clutch is gone. I see now why American cars are not being bought as much as foreign cars now. We (car consumers) want the traditional clutch to come back in effect. It’s the sportscar feel behind the wheel, you can’t feel it behind a Dodge Charger because there’s no clutch anymore, no matter how fast you make it. My favorite car is the Corvette, however, if someone tried to sell me a automatic I would not take it because it wouldn’t feel the same without the manual transmission. What’s your opinion on this?

The auto makers make cars that sell. While there is a small market for manual transmission cars, the great demand is for the automatics. There are many people in this world who can not drive a stick. Others can drive, but prefer an automatic transmission.

It is a case of lack of demand!

On a 1981 Corvette if the side yokes wear out can I get by with just replacing the yokes and ….?

and can the yokes be changed with the differential still in the car?

Is it possible to remove the left and right half-shafts and install 2 new yokes with the rear end still in the car?

Additional information so we can get on the same page…
….Right now I haven’t removed the differential cover but I did grab the top and bottom of the tire and checked for movement. After help from an assistant I determined that the yoke is moving in and out about an 1/8 of an inch. I have read articles that said there was a problem with the yokes on the 1978ish thru 1981 Corvettes where the vendor made the yokes but didn’t heat treat the material properly which caused premature wear in those Corvette’s side yokes. The clutch/spacers seem to be a little under hard acceleration. Haven’t tried GM posi-traction additive yet. The 1/8 movement at the yoke translates to more movement of the tire’s camber but the car still drives straight (after a rear wheel alignment. I do have some vibration in the rear and it is from the yoke sliding in and out of the differential.

I’m asking so I know what steps to take (rebuild or replace yokes etc…)

So can the yokes be changed with the differential still in the car?

Is it possible to remove the left and right half-shafts and install 2 new yokes with the differential still in the car?

if i am remembering the right car…. then yea its possible to replace without taking out the rear end….but its way easier if u do….

Does my 1994 Toyota Corolla need a new clutch?

I have a 1994 Toyota Corolla with manual transmission. In the past few days it has become very hard to get it into gear from a stopped position, I’ve had to actually slam the gearshift in place a few times. Once I’m on the road, it ‘loosens up’ and shifts as usual. The clutch still has the same amount of resistance and there are no new noises. I’m wondering if the clutch needs to be replaced or if it requires a simpler fix? Thanks for your help.

It’s a simple clutch linkage issue. If it has a hydraulic clutch cylinder it may be low on fluid or the clutch cylinder may be leaking. Hard shifting into any gear means that the clutch fork / clutch release bearing isn’t releasing the clutch pressure plate from the clutch disc.

i have a 1991 chevy camaro rs v8 with clutch problems?

when i first changed the clutch the master cylinder was leaking but shifting was nice and easy.when i changed it it wasent leaking but i had push the pedal twice in order to put 1 gear or reaverse when i am stopped it also creeps up when 1 is in when it is runnig after 1 the shifts are good. thank you

Have you considered the slave cylinder? If you are having to pump it there’s still a hydraulic problem. If there are no external leaks you’ve probably got fluid bypassing internally. There are only two placed this could be going on, either the master cylinder or the slave cylinder.
